  • Top and Effective Methods of Unclogging Shower Drains

    shower drain

We have all experienced this at one time; standing in the bathroom and suddenly water rises above our feet and it does not seem to drain. This is a sign of a clogged shower drain and it is a common plumbing problem in most households. Accumulated hair, dead skin, soap scum and oil mostly cause it. Instead of reaching out to call a plumber, here is a guide on how you can clear your clogged shower drain on your own:

Unclogging bathroom drain using a plunger

Using a plunger is quite an easy yet effective method of clearing clogged drains. Place a plunger directly on your shower drain and pump it in and out for a few minutes. Using hot water, flush any remaining debris and check if the drain is clear by opening a running tap.

To enhance the effectiveness of using a plunger, you can apply petroleum jelly on the rim of the plunger to get a more firm seal as you pump.

    Bent wire hanger method

This is quite an effective method when it comes to unclogging drains. Take a coat hanger and straighten it out leaving a small hook on one end. Take a flash light with you and shine it in the blocked drain. Start looking for hair, or any other nasty garbage that is causing the blockage. Do not pull the debris further, use the hook on the end to pull any garbage out of the drain. After removing as much garbage as you can, use hot water to clear the drainage.

    Baking soda and vinegar

Though this method takes a few hours, it is still as effective as any other method. Mix about a third cup of vinegar with the same amount of baking soda and immediately pour it in the clogged drain. Do not wait for the fizzing to stop as it is the one that helps to remove the rubbish that has build up in the pipe. Close the top of the drain and let the solution settle there for a few hours or even overnight. Then using hot water, flush the drain to wash way any remaining garbage.

    Unclog using chemicals

In case the above methods do not work, you can purchase chemicals such as draino from your local hardware store.

Caution; draino is made using very strong chemicals, therefore, be very careful when using it. Make sure you wear protective clothes such as gloves and goggles and open all the windows in the bathroom.

All the above methods are very effective in unclogging blocked drains but in case you are unable to unclog the drain, you can contact a professional plumber to assist you.
